Letonniemi Nature Reserve and Nature Trail

Letonniemi Nature Reserve is an important teaching and research site on land uplift, showcasing the seaside landscape and its evolution from sea to forest, just 6 km from the city centre. The 2.7 km long marked nature trail offers an excellent opportunity to discover the diverse and lush vegetation of Letonniemi.

Along the path, about 150m from the current beach, there is a navigational beacon in the middle of a growing forest. This small lighthouse building is called the Koskela Lighthouse, after its location. It was built in the 1940s to guide shipping to the shipping lane leading to the port of Toppila. At that time the sea level was still much higher. Piispanletto, in the middle of the area, was still an island in the 1950s - a letto being a shallow, treeless island on the coast of the Bothnian Sea.

At the Bishop's Lodge you will find a picnic shelter and a campfire site, as well as a bird tower with the best views of the coastal areas and the sea. In the Letonniemi nature reserve, it is forbidden to take or damage plants and plant parts. However, you may pick berries and mushrooms.
